Detainee allowed to take exams<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A detainee at the Salemba detention center will
\nbe permitted to take part in the national state university
\nentrance tests to be held next week, it was announced yesterday.<\/p>\n
Danang Kukuh Wardoyo, 19, one of three detainees arrested on
\nMarch 16 on charges of selling copies of an unlicensed magazine,
\ngained permission to sit for the exam from the Central Jakarta
\nDistrict Court.<\/p>\n
The decision signed by Judge Soehardjo includes an instruction
\nto the general prosecutor to provide the necessary security
\npersonnel to guard the detainee during the exam registrations on
\nJune 15 and during the exams on June 20-21.<\/p>\n
His lawyer, Rita S. Kolibonso of the Jakarta Legal Aid office,
\npraised the court's decision.<\/p>\n
\"This is as it should be, there is no reason for the court to
\ndeny the request for the detainee to seek learning opportunities
\nwhile in detention,\" Rita said.<\/p>\n
Danang's relatives have tried for weeks to obtain the permit
\non his behalf.<\/p>\n
Danang and the other detainees, Ahmad Taufik and Eko Maryadi
\nwho are members of an unlicensed journalists' organization, will
\nbe tried on Friday.<\/p>\n
Danang, who was an office helper at the Alliance of
\nIndependent Journalists, graduated last year from the state high
\nschool of SMA 2 in Pare, Kediri regency in East Java.<\/p>\n
Some 400,000 graduates are expected to register for the
\nentrance exams.<\/p>\n
\"He wants to apply to the Faculty of Engineering at the
\nUniversity of Indonesia,\" said his aunt. (anr)<\/p>",
