Detained actress Ratna hospitalized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Actress Ratna Sarumpaet, who stands accused of
\nholding an illegal political meeting and is being held in custody
\nat the Jakarta Police Headquarters, was rushed to hospital on
\nTuesday night with acute back pains, her relatives said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Ratna was rushed to Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC) on Jl.
\nH.R. Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, at 9 p.m., after complaining she
\nwas unable to move her body, Ratna's son Muhammad Iqbal said.<\/p>\n
"My mother has suffered back pain for almost two years. She
\nused to be treated here," Iqbal told The Jakarta Post from the
\nhospital.<\/p>\n
He said Ratna was undergoing physiotherapy and her condition
\nwas improving.<\/p>\n
Her lawyer, Johnson Panjaitan, said earlier that Ratna's
\nillness had recurred because of the poor conditions in her
\nholding cell.<\/p>\n
Ratna rejected the authorities' offer of admission to the
\nPolice Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, because she
\nconsidered the conditions there to be substandard, Johnson added.<\/p>\n
Police turned down a request from her lawyers' that she be
\nplaced under house arrest. Her relatives plan to appeal against
\nthe decision.<\/p>\n
Ratna was among nine people arrested in a hotel in Ancol,
\nNorth Jakarta, at the so-called Indonesian People's Summit on
\nMarch 11.<\/p>\n
Ratna and five others -- her daughter Fathom Saulina, reporter
\nGing Ginanjar, lawyer Alexius Surya Tjahaya Tomu, activist
\nNandang Wirakusumah, and art worker Jul Taher -- are still in
\npolice custody.<\/p>\n
The six detainees all filed lawsuits against North Jakarta
\nPolice Chief Lt. Col. Rismawan and Jakarta Police Chief Maj. Gen.
\nHamami Nata over their arrest and detention, which they said was
\nillegal. North Jakarta District Court rejected their allegations.<\/p>\n
The case against them is scheduled to be heard by the same
