        "content": "<p>Destruction of trees<\/p>\n<p>Bogor -- which was once called Buitenzorg (place without care)<br>\nin the very distant past because of its cool climate, beautiful<br>\nsurroundings, lush vegetation and quiet -- has now become a very<br>\nnoisy, hot, polluted concrete jungle in which numerous and almost<br>\ncontinuous traffic jams contribute to making life even more<br>\nmiserable for its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there is ample evidence that the bureaucrats<br>\nresponsible for the city's management are too busy lining their<br>\nown pockets to care.<\/p>\n<p>In its Dec. 4, 1996 edition, the daily Suara Pembaruan<br>\nfeatured an article under the heading Dozens of trees belonging<br>\nto the collection of Bogor's Botanical Gardens about to be cut<br>\ndown for a parking area.<\/p>\n<p>To my knowledge, The Jakarta Post has, as yet, made no mention<br>\nof this appalling destruction of ancient and historically<br>\nvaluable trees which is about to take place very soon.<\/p>\n<p>According to Suara Pembaruan's report, one of the trees to be<br>\nfelled is the priceless pterocarpus indicus wild tree planted by<br>\nProf. J.E. Teijsmann, the director of the Bogor Botanical Gardens<br>\nfrom 1831 to 1867.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the article also mentioned the alarming decline<br>\nof the world-renowned garden, from an erstwhile richly stocked<br>\nand impeccably maintained research center, to a disgracefully<br>\nneglected, garbage-infested place of recreation, in which many<br>\nscientifically valuable trees have died because they were not<br>\nprovided with the proper care.<\/p>\n<p>As might have been expected, the gardens' current director,<br>\nDr. Suhirman, had gone to Bali, and was therefore \"unavailable<br>\nfor comment\".<\/p>\n<p>What will become of the Bogor Botanical Gardens, without its<br>\nworld-famous collection of trees and plants?<\/p>\n<p>And what will become of Bogor itself, when asinine<br>\nbureaucratic decisions based on shortsightedness and greed<br>\ndrastically reduce and ultimately destroy the gardens, which<br>\nserve as Bogor's lungs and is also the city's pride and joy?<\/p>\n<p>Truly, we Indonesians should be ashamed of ourselves for<br>\nallowing such wanton destruction to occur.<\/p>\n<p>TAMI KOESTOMO<\/p>\n<p>Bogor, West Java<\/p>",
