Desperate man appeals for euthanasia on wife<\/p>\n

Hasan Kesuma, 33, appealed to the Bogor Council on Friday to
\nallow doctors to euthanize his wife, Agian Isna Naili, who has
\nbeen in a coma for almost two months.<\/p>\n
The unprecedented plea was made after doctors at Pertamina
\nHospital in South Jakarta said Agian had suffered permanent brain
\ndamage and would never return to her previous self. Agian has
\nbeen in a coma since undergoing surgery days after giving birth.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Medical Association chairman Farid Anfansa Moeloek
\nsaid doctors could only euthanize a patient if they first
\nreceived a court order approving the decision.<\/p>\n
"(In general) euthanasia is against the law. But if a patient
\nor his relatives want it done, they must obtain the court's
\nconsent," he was quoted as saying by Antara on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Farid said euthanasia remained a controversial issue
\nthroughout the world.<\/p>\n
"Passing a law on euthanasia is not urgent for Indonesia ....
\nThe sociocultural background of Indonesians should be taken into
\nconsideration, because it is natural for relatives to take care
\nof loved ones who are in critical condition."<\/p>\n
Agian gave birth at Bogor Islamic Hospital and was treated
\nafterward at Yuliana Maternity Hospital.<\/p>\n
On July 21, she was transferred back to Bogor Islamic Hospital
\nafter experiencing hypertension, where she was operated on by
\nobstetrician Gunawan Muhammad. She has been in a coma since the
\noperation.<\/p>\n
She was treated at the Indonesian Red Cross Hospital in Bogor
\nfor two weeks, before being transferred to Pertamina Hospital for
\na CAT scan.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 27, the Legal Aid Institute for Health Affairs (LBH
\nKesehatan) had Agian transferred to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital
\nin Jakarta. The organization is looking into the possibility that
\nAgian's condition was caused by malpractice on the part of the
\nsurgeon.<\/p>\n
LBH Kesehatan has reported the case to the Tanah Sereal Police
\nin Bogor, and Hasan has filed a complaint with the West Java
\nPolice.<\/p>",
