Designer celebrates award<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Noted designer Harry Darsono celebrated
\nyesterday an award he got from the City Tourism Office earlier
\nthis month.<\/p>\n
The office presented a Tourism Award to Harry for his work in
\nhaute couture and fibrous art.<\/p>\n
The celebration, which was held at a South Jakarta gallery,
\nwas marked by the cutting of a traditional rice cone.<\/p>\n
Harry said he got his motives from several world traditions.<\/p>\n
\"As an artist one should not stick only with the old
\ntraditions but has to be able to develop it into a contemporary
\nproduct of art.\"<\/p>\n
Harry said he might have been lucky because since 1976 his
\ndesigns had been printed in several countries.<\/p>\n
\"This means I've introduced Indonesia abroad,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Harry said if artists wanted to advance traditional art they
\nshould live like a tree which keeps growing.<\/p>\n
\"So, don't just copy traditional objects as they are,
\ndevelop them into a something new.\"<\/p>\n
However, in this workmanship the tradition should remain the
\nanvil, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Be like a tree which grows bigger and bigger but is still
\nrooted in the earth,\" Harry said. (05)<\/p>",
