Design for subway in the work<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has chosen an
\nIndonesian-Japanese-European consortium to prepare a basic design
\nfor the construction of country's first subway system connecting
\nBlok M in South Jakarta and Kota in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A memorandum of understanding on the basic design will be
\nsigned here in the near future, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja told
\nreporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
In order to finance the project, he said the government has
\ncombined local and foreign investors to participate in making the
\nsubway's basic design.<\/p>\n
\"The consortium is called IJEG or the Indonesian-Japan-
\nEuropean group,\" Surjadi said but refused to give further details
\non the date of the MOU signing.<\/p>\n
He said that the companies in the consortium are expected to
\nnegotiate among themselves their contributions to the basic
\ndesign costs before the signing.<\/p>\n
The Bisnis Indonesia daily reported earlier that the
\nconsortium consists of Itochu Corp (Japan), Ferrostaal AG, AEG,
\nSiemens (Germany), Asea Brown Bovery Ltd. (Sweden-Switzerland),
\nTaylor Woodrow Plc. (England) and several local partners,
\nincluding Citra Lamtorogung, Bakrie Brothers, Lippo, Bukaka,
\nSuhamthabie and Steady Safe.<\/p>\n
The governor, who is also the chairman of the project
\nmanagement unit, said that the consortium will not automatically
\nwin the contract to build the subway system.<\/p>\n
\"After the consortium produces the basic design, there will be
\na tender to determine the company in charge of constructing the
\nproject,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi's statement corrects the remarks made
\nrecently by Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto that
\nthe government would shun a tender process and directly choose
\nthe partners to build the subway project.<\/p>\n
The subway's basic design will cost about US$8 million while
\nthe total cost of the 14-kilometer subway project has been
\nestimated at a cost of US$1.3 billion.<\/p>\n
\"The basic design is expected to be finished next year,\" the
\ngovernor said.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said that his project management unit is still hard at
\nwork calculating the project costs.<\/p>\n
\"Calculating the cost is very difficult because we have to
\npredict how much should be invested in every kilometer,\" he said.
