There has been much discussion of late on presidential
\ncandidates, though the law regulating this matter has yet to be
\nthoroughly discussed by the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Debates over candidates' required educational levels or
\nhis\/her status in legal cases are legitimate, as long as they are
\nmeant to find the best leaders for the country. Sadly, the
\nimpression one gets is that these debates are really aimed at
\nremoving political opponents, while other no less important
\nsubjects are never discussed.<\/p>\n
The criteria for presidential candidates basically involve
\nmentality and capability, which are outlined in Article 6,
\nParagraph (1) of the amended Constitution, in which the word
\n\"indigenous\" has been dropped. Based on the idea that
\ndiscrimination should be eliminated and the \"indigenous\"
\nrequirement was not clear, the elimination of this word may also
\nhave had global considerations. But is there any guarantee that
\nnominees who have no historical or emotional ties with Indonesia
\nwill demonstrate the needed nationalism?<\/p>\n
In addition to professional capabilities, nationalism and
\nstatesmanship are also badly required at a time when Indonesia is
\nfacing problems of national integrity. Therefore, prioritizing
\nnational interests rather than personal\/group pursuits, the
\npeople's representatives should define the term \"indigenous\" in
\nthe bill on presidential elections, along with other criteria.<\/p>\n
