Deputy Minister of Environment and Deputy Head of the Environmental\nControl Agency (KLH\/BPLH), Diaz Hendropriyono, has stressed the\nimportance of waste sorting as the key to achieving emission reduction\ntargets in the waste sector, as stipulated in Indonesia\u2019s Nationally\nDetermined Contribution (NDC). \u201cWhat I want to highlight is that waste\nmanagement methods like WTE and RDF plants risk not functioning without\nproper sorting. So, what is done upstream, like sorting, may seem\ntrivial, but its impact is significant, including on our NDC\nachievement,\u201d Diaz said in a written statement on Monday\n(15\/6\/2026).<\/p>\n
Diaz made the remarks during the Ministerial Dialogue on Climate\nChange: Accelerating NDC Achievement through Carbon Economic Value. The\nevent was part of the 2026 World Environment Day commemoration organised\nby KLH\/BPLH at the JICC in Jakarta. Diaz explained that KLH\/BPLH is the\nagency responsible for achieving the waste sector targets in the NDC.\nGiven the large emission reduction targets that must be met, various\nstrategic efforts and measures are required to realise them. \u201cFor the\nwaste sector, the custodian is KLH, and there is a target to reduce 40\nmillion tonnes from the waste sector. This is done through various\nmethods from upstream to downstream,\u201d Diaz clarified.<\/p>\n
At the upstream stage, Diaz stated that emission reduction efforts in\nthe solid waste subsector are carried out by strengthening composting\npractices supported by waste sorting from the source. \u201cFirst, we do\ncomposting and sorting. In the Rorotan area, there is an RDF Plant, and\nwe have begun implementing a sorting programme in North Jakarta. After\nsorting, the waste can be turned into slurry that will later be taken to\nmaggot breeders,\u201d he explained. In addition to the household level,\nKLH\/BPLH is also promoting good waste management practices in the\nNutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG) and Sekolah Rakyat (People\u2019s\nSchools). In this way, the President\u2019s national priority programmes also\ncontribute to waste reduction and emission control efforts. \u201cFor SPPG\nand Sekolah Rakyat, we are promoting composting there to improve\ncomposting methods,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For larger volumes of waste generation, KLH\/BPLH is preparing\ntechnologies such as waste-to-energy (WTE) and RDF capable of processing\n1,000 to 2,500 tonnes of waste per day. \u201cWTE has been widely discussed,\nand batch 1 is complete. Batch 2 is currently in the auction process at\nDanantara, including Jogja, Bogor Raya, and others.
