Depok residents told to calm down<\/p>\n
Fearing escalating tension in Depok following the court ruling
\nthat overturned the result of the June 26 mayoral election, the
\nJakarta Police called on Depok residents to stay calm, while
\nsaying that police would send more personnel.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said the police
\nwould maintain a high alert in the Depok mayoralty.<\/p>\n
Fears of violent clashes between the supporters of Badrul
\nKamal and Syihabuddin Ahmad and the election winners Nur Mahmudi
\nIsmail and Yuyun Wirasaputra reached a new height following the
\nWest Java High Court's ruling on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The court found rampant vote rigging and manipulation in the
\nelection which had led to the undercounting of Badrul's vote and
\nthe overcounting of Nur Mahmudi's vote.<\/p>\n
The ruling brought fresh disappointment to supporters of Nur
\nMahmudi, who is a candidate from the Prosperous Justice Party
\n(PKS) and also the former forestry minister.<\/p>\n
His supporters plan to stage a massive rally on Saturday to
\nprotest the decision.<\/p>\n
"There has been consensus from both pairs to maintain the
\npeace ... But, we have deployed around 200 personnel to back up
\nthe Depok Police precinct to stave off possible threats to
\nsecurity," Firman said.<\/p>\n
Despite the court ruling, some administrative law experts said
\nthat Badrul would have to delay any celebrations should Nur
\nMahmudi lodge an appeal with the Supreme Court. -- JP<\/p>",
