Indonesia's Attorney General and National Police Chief have publicly dismissed rumours of a rift between their institutions following a corruption case against a former senior prosecutor. The leaders emphasised their long-standing personal friendship and commitment to strengthening cooperation within the criminal justice system. The meeting appeared to counter claims by former Coordinating Minister Mahfud MD, who had suggested the two were unable to meet in a single forum.

JAKARTA — The leadership of the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung)
and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) have assured the public that
relations between the two law enforcement institutions remain perfectly
sound.

The assurance came amid news of legal tensions following the naming
of former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie
Adriansyah as a suspect in a corruption case by a joint investigation
team from Polda Metro Jaya and the Tipidkor Task Force.

Rumours have circulated widely that the two institutions were
feuding, further complicating a relationship that has long been awkward.
Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs
Mahfud MD added fuel to the speculation, claiming that the Police Chief
and the Attorney General found it difficult to meet in a single
forum.

“Do not think that we (Kejagung and Polri) are rivals, that we are
against each other. No,” said Attorney General ST Burhanuddin in the
presence of Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo at the Attorney General’s
Office in Jakarta on Monday (13/7/2027).

Burhanuddin said he had personally known Sigit for a long time. “We
have known each other personally for a long time,” said Burhanuddin, who
addressed the Police Chief as “friend”.

Their careers, he said, were what had brought each of them to lead
the Adhyaksa Corps and Sigit to become Police Chief.

Although in recent days law enforcement pressure has been applied by
Polri against former Jampidsus Febrie Adriansyah, Burhanuddin insisted
there was no offence taken, nor any serious friction that would set
Kejagung and Polri against each other in inter-agency rivalry.

“Do not also think that something happened because of recent events.
We continue to maintain our relationship as usual, just as we have
always done,” said Burhanuddin.

The Police Chief’s visit to Kejagung this time, he said, was to
ensure there was no breakdown in communication and that the two law
enforcement institutions remained in synergy. “And we discussed how to
make improvements going forward,” Burhanuddin added.

Police Chief Sigit echoed the same message. General Sigit stressed
that his visit to Attorney General Burhanuddin was that of a younger
brother to an elder. “My mentor, the Attorney General, Mr Sanitiar
Burhanuddin. And thank God, today we were honoured to be received for a
courtesy visit and audience concerning many matters,” said Sigit.

The Police Chief revealed that the most important outcome of the
roughly 40-minute conversation with the Attorney General was their
mutual agreement to enhance the quality of cooperation between Kejagung
and Polri.

“We discussed how, going forward, the prosecution service and the
police, as one unit of law enforcement within the criminal justice
system, must certainly be strengthened and reinforced,” said Sigit.

The Police Chief rejected the notion of a continuing rivalry between
the prosecution service and the police following Febrie’s naming as a
suspect by the joint investigation team from Polda Metro and the Polri
Tipidkor Task Force. “The clear fact is that the prosecution service and
the police are one big family, and we will continue to ensure that this
big family maintains its solidarity and synergy,” said the Police
Chief.
",
