DENPASAR, Bali (JP): A sixty-year-old man was killed and five
\nothers were severely injured on Tuesday morning during a violent
\nattack by hundreds of residents of Desa Adat Culik traditional
\nvillage against the residents of Banjar Kebon in Karangasem, some
\n80 kilometers northeast of here, a report said.<\/p>\n
The attackers also burned down at least 30 houses and two
\nmotorcycles belonging to Banjar Kebon residents.<\/p>\n
The victims were all residents of Banjar Kebon, with the dead
\nman identified as Nengah Migun.<\/p>\n
The attack, which occurred at around 7 a.m., occurred so
\nsuddenly that the outnumbered residents of Banjar Kebon were not
\nable to defend themselves. Most of them fled to the safety of
\nnearby hills and villages.<\/p>\n
The attack was apparently triggered by the recent openly-
\nexpressed desire of the residents of Banjar Kebon to secede from
\nDesa Adat Culik and establish a new Desa Adat of their own. Desa
\nAdat is an autonomous territorial-based traditional community
\ngroup comprising several smaller traditional neighborhood units,
\nknown as a Banjar.<\/p>\n
Residents of Banjar Kebon and Desa Adat Culik have been
\ninvolved in a bitter legal feud for years over the ownership of
\n600 hectares of land. Angered by the rebellious stance of Banjar
\nKebon's residents, Desa Adat Culik expelled them from the Desa
\nAdat's membership last April.<\/p>\n
Security troops were unable to immediately reach the site of
\nthe incident because the 1.5-kilometer road that leads to Banjar
\nKebon was blocked at numerous points with huge trees apparently
\nfelled by the attackers prior to the attack. The presence of
\ngroups of men armed with sharp weapons at various points along
\nthe road also hampered the movement of the troops.<\/p>\n
Only after reinforcements from the police's elite Mobile
\nBrigade joined them from Denpasar, did security forces manage to
\nreach the village. -- JP<\/p>\n
Medan loses its historical buildings<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The capital of North Sumatra, Medan,
\nwill soon lose its rich legacy of historical buildings because
\nthey are being demolished at an alarming rate, say non-
\ngovernmental organizations (NGOs).<\/p>\n
Medan city administration has failed to heed provincial ruling
\nNo. 6\/1988 which bans demolition of historical buildings, Hasti
\nTarekat told reporters in Medan on Tuesday after meeting the head
\nof provincial legislators.<\/p>\n
The executive director of the Sumatra Legacy Body was
\naccompanied by representatives of seven other NGOs.<\/p>\n
Hasti said almost 90 percent of Medan's 42 buildings under
\ngovernment protection had either been modified or demolished. The
\nlocal government declared 42 buildings and areas to be of
\nsignificant historical value or only about half of the 73
\nbuildings and areas that the body considered should be
\nuntouchable.<\/p>\n
In their meeting with legislator Tom Adlin Hajar, the
\nactivists cited three buildings that have been demolished;
\nKerapatan building on Jl. Brig. Jen. Katamso, a bank building on
\nJl. Pemuda and the Public Works office on Jl. Listrik.<\/p>\n
One building the body believes to be of historical value but
\nhad not been protected by the provincial government was the Mega
\nEltra building, which was constructed in 1912 and belonged to a
\nresident.<\/p>\n
The city government claimed it was not on the list of
\nprotected buildings and so had been sold for Rp 26 billion to
\nmake way for a shopping center. The building has now been
\ncompletely demolished. --JP<\/p>",
