Denmark provides grant<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government of Denmark has agreed to provide
\na US$7.87 million grant to Indonesia to help secure high quality
\ntree seedlings for the country's reforestation efforts.<\/p>\n
The agreement for the grant, which would help fund the
\nIndonesia Forest Tree Seed Project, was signed by Danish
\nAmbassador Michael Sternberg and Minister of Forestry Djamaludin
\nSuryohadikusumo here yesterday.<\/p>\n
The project will help improve reforestation efforts carried
\nout from West Java's capital of Bandung, South Sumatra's capital
\nof Palembang, Banjar Baru regency in South Kalimantan and South
\nSulawesi's capital of Ujungpandang.<\/p>\n
Sternberg said that the project's long-term significance had
\nbeen further underlined in light of the importance of the
\nforestry sector to the Indonesian economy and due to the recent
\nsetbacks to the sector from extensive forest fires last year.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, the Danish fund will be used to finance
\nthe project's experts, equipment and material, supporting
\npersonnel, training, transportation and administrative costs.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government will provide $1.9 million to finance
\nthe project's offices, office operational and maintenance costs,
\nIndonesian staff members and training costs.<\/p>\n
Djamaludin said that he hoped the project would be able to
\nsignificantly contribute to the forestry development and forest
\nplantation programs by addressing problems and constraints
\nrelated to seed production and distribution. (gis)<\/p>",
