Dengue, malaria feared in Manado<\/p>\n
MANADO, North Sulawesi (JP): Local health officials here
\nwarned that the province could be in the grip of an epidemic of
\ndengue and malaria fever.<\/p>\n
The head of the contagious diseases eradication unit at the
\nlocal health office, Soetjipto, expressed concern on Saturday at
\nthe increasing number of patients being treated for the diseases
\nin the past few months.<\/p>\n
The provincial capital, Manado, was identified as the area
\nmost prone to the spread of malaria because of its location near
\nmarshland.<\/p>\n
Of 529 cases of malaria recorded in the province this year,
\n413 occurred in the city.<\/p>\n
The spread of dengue fever has been recorded in all areas of
\nthe province, he said.<\/p>\n
Spread of the diseases would be expedited if members of the
\npublic failed to recognize the need to make proper sanitation and
\nhygiene part of their lives. (04)<\/p>",
