Deng's daughter welcomed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto yesterday extended an
\nofficial welcome to China's Junior Minister of Science and
\nTechnology Deng Nan, the third daughter of the deceased Chinese
\nleader Deng Xiao Ping.<\/p>\n
Deng Nan, 52, arrived on Sunday for a one-week visit to
\npromote cooperation in the fields of science and technology. The
\nelectrical engineer was accompanied by Indonesia's Minister of
\nResearch and Technology B.J. Habibie when he paid a courtesy call
\non Soeharto yesterday.<\/p>\n
Deng later told reporters that Indonesia and China are
\nprepared to work together on projects including agriculture,
\nforestry, remote sensing, medicine and energy.<\/p>\n
She said that Indonesia-China cooperation in those fields
\nwould be considered at a meeting with the Research and Technology
\nCommission in Beijing in September.<\/p>\n
Habibie expressed particular support for cooperation in
\nmedicine, which he said, was feasible because of China's
\nexperience in various forms of treatment including acupuncture.<\/p>\n
Deng said, during her visit of the state-owned aviation
\ncompany PT IPTN, that Indonesia was ready for a \"strong take-
\noff.\"<\/p>\n
Her father, Deng Xiao Ping, who was suffering from advanced
\nstages of Parkinson's disease, died on Feb. 19 at the age of 92
\nfrom complications of a lung infection.<\/p>\n
Deng Xiao Ping is credited the economic reforms which have
\ntransformed China into a major regional force. He has been
\nsucceeded by his heir Jiang Jemin, 70. (01)<\/p>",
