Demonstrators neglect ethics<\/p>\n

It was an unexpected sight to see hundreds of Acehnese
\nstudents and community members in Jakarta going to the
\nlegislative building. It saddened us.<\/p>\n
While they demanded a referendum for Aceh, the younger ones
\namong them showed arrogance in making pledges and trying to
\nbehave like democrats. The action was followed by throwing water
\nbottles at House of Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung.<\/p>\n
The question arose of whether that was the behavior induced by
\nthe reform movement toward democracy. I do not think so. True
\ndemocracy actually teaches how to launch a demonstration and how
\nto file demands.<\/p>\n
Whatever the result of a demand, demonstrators should be able
\nto control their emotions and mood to prevent anarchical
\nbehavior. Throwing water bottles, taking a goat to the respected
\nbuilding, whatever the reason, are immoral acts. I recommend that
\nwe strive to understand democracy in greater depth. Reform does
\nnot mean arbitrary behavior. The demand for a referendum in Aceh
\ncannot be decided by a figure like Akbar Tandjung. He is a small
\nelement of an institution called the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
It was not logical that the demonstrators said they acted on
\nbehalf of the Acehnese people. They should not soil the name of
\nvirtuous Acehnese students by acting in an emotional manner.<\/p>\n
