Demonstrators from the \u2018Menuju Indonesia Bangkrut\u2019 (Towards\nIndonesia\u2019s Bankruptcy) rally remained at Dukuh Atas on Jalan M.H.\nThamrin, Central Jakarta, into Friday evening, 12 June 2026. At around 7\np.m. Western Indonesian Time, the protesters were seen holding their\nground despite a police blockade.<\/p>\n
The alliance had originally planned to demonstrate at the Bundaran HI\nroundabout. However, they were intercepted by police at Dukuh Atas,\napproximately 500 metres from the roundabout.<\/p>\n
As darkness fell, the demonstrators continued to chant slogans and\nsing songs of struggle. They sang \u2018Halo-halo Bandung\u2019 and \u2018Maju Tak\nGentar\u2019, and jointly shouted revolutionary jargon. Rows of police and\nmilitary personnel blocked them with shields, and traffic was held up\nbehind the crowd.<\/p>\n
The \u2018Menuju Indonesia Bangkrut\u2019 rally was initiated by a student\nalliance from various universities. Some demonstrators were seen leaving\nthe protest as evening approached, including a contingent from the\nUniversity of Indonesia\u2019s Student Executive Board (BEM UI). However,\nstudents from other universities chose to remain. A number of office\nworkers also joined the crowd after finishing work.<\/p>\n
Zikra, a worker who arrived at the site after office hours, said the\ndemonstration was still crowded. \u2018There are probably still more than a\nthousand people,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The BEM UI alliance had arrived in front of the Thamrin Nine Ballroom\nbuilding at 3:10 p.m. Western Indonesian Time, having walked from\nSemanggi, Central Jakarta. The bus they were travelling on was barred by\nauthorities from proceeding to the Bundaran HI roundabout.<\/p>\n
The rally was initiated by an alliance of Student Executive Boards\nfrom the University of Indonesia (UI), IPB University, Politeknik Negeri\nJakarta, Universitas Pancasila, Universitas Gunadarma, as well as\nstudent organisations such as the National Student Front and the\nProgressive Student Union (Semar UI).<\/p>\n
There were at least five demands in this protest. First, to stop the\nwastefulness of the State Budget (APBN). Second, to lower the prices of\nbasic necessities and fuel. Third, to halt the free nutritious meal\nprogramme and the construction of the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives.\nFourth, the alliance also demanded an end to militarism in the civilian\nsphere.
