Democracy YLBHI's top priority<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Leaders of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute
\n(YLBHI) have agreed to stick to their present mission of fighting
\nfor greater democracy in the country.<\/p>\n
The foundation said that at the end of a three-day leadership
\nmeeting on Tuesday members agreed on YLBHI's main mission for the
\nnext four years, which includes the establishment of a democratic
\ngovernment system, free and independent institutions, and better
\norganization synergy.<\/p>\n
YLBHI said in a statement that it will fight for more
\ndemocratic mechanisms and more effective control by the people.
\nDemocracy in the country is only possible through strong civilian
\ninstitutions and when the people are allowed to freely organize
\npolitically, it added.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by the executive board's 12 members,
\nfour members from the caretaker board, nine members from the
\nadvisory board and representatives from the 16 Legal Aid
\nInstitutes throughout Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The executive board is currently led by a presidium of four
\npeople -- Soekardjo Adidjojo, Amartiwi Saleh, Mas Achmad Santosa
\nand Frans Hendra Winarta -- who are filling in a vacuum that was
\ncreated when Adnan Buyung Nasution tendered his resignation in
\nOctober.<\/p>\n
It was Adnan who two years ago declared that YLBHI was a
\n"locomotive for democracy" that should take on more politically-
\ncharged cases, including human rights issues.<\/p>\n
According to the statement, the caretaker board will continue
\nwith its task pending the results of an election for the
\nexecutive director position, which should be held by the end of
