How can democracy have any meaning if the communists still
\naspire to return to the political stage? It's wishful thinking.<\/p>\n
This is due to the fact that the younger generation of
\ncommunists insist that they (the Indonesian communists) are
\nright; and what the communists were blamed for in the past -- a
\nseries of armed rebellions, culminating in the Sept. 30 Movement
\n-- they believe was not the work of the Indonesian communists or
\nthe PKI, yet it was the communists who were victimized.<\/p>\n
Therefore, as an Indonesian citizen, I call on fellow citizens
\nnot to forget history, let alone manipulate the facts concerning
\nthe communists' brutality. From now on we should exercise
\nvigilance so as not to become victims again of the tactics and
\nstrategy of the communists, who are opposed to democracy and work
\nagainst justice.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, we should be more careful in dealing with the
\npresent conditions, in which the communists have tried to
\nintegrate themselves into democratic society -- deploying new and
\nsubtler modes of action -- saying that the anticommunist mind-set
\nis actually undemocratic.<\/p>\n
Being consistent in pursuing an anticommunist ideology, we
\nmust not let ourselves be trapped into the false notion that the
\nanticommunist mind-set is undemocratic.<\/p>\n
Let's look at western countries as a good example. Although
\nthey practice liberal democracy, their anticommunist stance never
\nfails to inspire them. They denounced communism in the past, and
\nare opposed to it now.<\/p>\n
As an ideology, communism has not died. It is always trying to
\npenetrate almost every sector -- religions, legal bureaucracies,
\nand even the military establishments.<\/p>\n
