        "content": "<p>Demand for TV receivers to rise<\/p>\n<p>BEKASI, West Java (JP): Demand for television receivers will<br>\nincrease to 2.5 million units in 1998, 38.8 percent higher than<br>\nthe demand in 1995, a Toshiba executive said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our new factories have therefore been established to tap the<br>\ngrowing market,\" said Fumio Sato, president of Toshiba Corp. of<br>\nJapan, at the inauguration of three Toshiba joint-venture plants.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Industry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo yesterday<br>\nsimultaneously inaugurated PT Tosummit Electronic Devices<br>\nIndonesia, PT Toshiba Consumer Products Indonesia and PT Toshiba<br>\nMetal Parts Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Tosummit Electronic produces 14 and 20-inch color-picture<br>\ntubes and has an annual capacity of 2.3 million tubes for Toshiba<br>\nConsumer Products' TV sets. Toshiba Metal Parts manufactures<br>\nmetal components such as flames, inner-shields and holders for<br>\nTosummit Electronic's tubes, Sato said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Toshiba Consumer Products was designed with an annual<br>\nproduction capacity of one million sets.<\/p>\n<p>Tosummit Electronic's president Hirofumi Kakiuchi said that<br>\nonce his plant begins operating at full capacity in 1998,<br>\nIndonesia will be able to save US$100 million which otherwise<br>\nwould have been spent on imported picture tubes.<\/p>\n<p>Tunky said the new facilities would strengthen the structure<br>\nof the electronics industry by reducing the reliance of local<br>\ncompanies on imported electronic components.<\/p>\n<p>\"The total investment of the three plants is estimated at<br>\n$146.89 million, of which Tosummit Electronic, as the biggest<br>\nproject, accounted for $100 million,\" Sato added.<\/p>\n<p>The Toshiba television-tube plant is the second such facility<br>\nin the country.<\/p>\n<p>The first television-tube factory was PT Lucky-Goldstar<br>\nElectronics Display Devices Indonesia, a fully-owned subsidiary<br>\nof Lucky-Goldstar Group of South Korea, which was opened in June<br>\nby President Soeharto at Cibitung, West Java.<\/p>\n<p>With an initial investment of $250 million, PT Lucky-Goldstar<br>\nis producing several varieties of television components such as<br>\nvideo cassette recorders, computer monitors and depletion yokes.<\/p>\n<p>Tosummit Electronic, founded in 1995, is a joint venture which<br>\nis 35 percent owned by PT Tabung Gambar Indonesia, 28 percent by<br>\nToshiba Corporation and 22 percent by Sumitomo Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Toshiba Metal Parts, founded in 1995, is a joint venture<br>\nbetween Toshiba Metal Parts Corporation, which owns 81 percent of<br>\nthe equity, and Sumitomo Corp., with 19 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Toshiba Consumer Products, set up early this year 1996, is a<br>\njoint venture between Toshiba Singapore Pte. Ltd, which holds two<br>\nthirds of the total shares, and Toshiba Corporation with the<br>\nremaining one third. (06)<\/p>",
