Demand for security equipment on the rise<\/p>\n

Not long ago, the Australian government of John Howard issued
\nanother travel warning to its citizens, listing a number of
\ncountries, including -- once again -- Indonesia, to be avoided.<\/p>\n
With several bomb tragedies taking place in Indonesia during
\nthe past several years, the recent travel warning was not a
\nsurprise. The United States has frequently made similar appeals.<\/p>\n
From the bombings in Bali in October 2002, the JW Marriott
\nHotel in Jakarta in August, 2003, the Australian Embassy in
\nJakarta in September last year, to the latest blasts in Bali,
\nforeigners, particularly Americans and Australians, were clearly
\nthe prime target.<\/p>\n
So it is quite understandable that the U.S. and Australian
\ngovernments were concerned about terrorist threats in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, Americans and Australians keep coming to
\nIndonesia, notably Bali. \"Which country in the world is now safe
\nfrom threats or bombings by terrorists?,\" an Australian tourist
\ntold a TV station recently when he was asked about the reasons
\nwhy many tourists ignored the travel warning.<\/p>\n
It's logical, then. Even America, with its sophisticated
\nintelligence and security systems, could still be penetrated by
\nterrorists when both towers of the World Trade Center in
\nSeptember 2001 were totally destroyed by terrorist attacks. If a
\nnation the caliber of America's cab be caught unaware, what
\nchance do countries like Indonesia have?<\/p>\n
It does not mean that we have no way of preventing acts of
\nterror in Indonesia. Security equipment of every degree of
\nsophistication and from numerous countries can now be easily
\nfound in the country's major security equipment stores.<\/p>\n
Datascrip Indonesia and Axindo Humaperdana are among the
\nhundreds of companies operating as security apparatus
\ndistributors in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Datascrip supplies CCTV equipment, fingerprint instruments and
\nlately, wireless alarms. Axindo is a provider of electronic
\nsecurity system services with various devices that are imported
\nfrom all over the globe.<\/p>\n
The series of terror attacks over the past several years has
\ncontributed to a significant increase in the demand for security
\ntools, especially for office buildings, apartments, hotels and
\nshopping malls.<\/p>\n
In addition to the growing concerns over the terrorist
\nthreats, the surge in demand for security equipment has also been
\ndue to the government's appeals.<\/p>\n
No less than Jakarta governor Sutiyoso instructed that all
\nhotels and office buildings in the city equip their properties
\nwith adequate security equipment, following the bomb attack in
\nfront of the JW Hotel Marriott. He even issued specifications of
\nstandard security gadgets that have to be provided by hotels and
\noffice buildings.<\/p>\n
The standard specifications concern metal detectors (mobile
\nand entrance sensors) and CCTV (for installation in strategic
\nplaces). And at present, almost no office buildings or hotels in
\nthe city are without these security devices.<\/p>\n

\nSuhartanto said that the demand for security equipment,
\nespecially fingerprint, CCTV and wireless alarm equipment, had
\nshowed a sharp growth in recent years.<\/p>\n
Yenni even expressed optimism that in 2006, the growth of the
\nDatascrip's security tool sales would even bigger thanks to the
\nrecent launching of a new wireless alarm system.<\/p>\n
\"I'm optimistic that the new wireless alarm system will sell
\nwell and jack up the company's total sales,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Like Yenni, operations manager of Axindo Humaperdana,
\nChristian Tarigan, acknowledged that there had been a significant
\nincrease in the sales of his company's security equipment in the
\npast few years.<\/p>\n
Christian explained that most business establishments were now
\nalready aware of the need for security devices. Both Christian
\nand Yenni recognized the need to educate society on the
\nimportance of security equipment to support security conditions
\nas a whole.<\/p>\n
Both Yenni and Christian noted that although there was an
\nimprovement in people's awareness to the need for security
\nprotection, most Indonesians still regarded security tools as
\nsecond priority.<\/p>\n
\"Generally, Indonesians will think of the importance of
\nsecurity equipment only after a disaster has happened,\" Yenni
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian public is indeed accustomed to anything instant
\nor quick yielding. Therefore, for security equipment
\ndistributors, educating the public on the importance of security
\ndevices would play an important factor for their future growth.<\/p>",
