Demand for land mapping and survey services seen rising<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Demand for land mapping and survey services is
\nlikely to grow this year as regions gain more autonomy from
\nJakarta, the National Coordinating Agency for Surveying and
\nMapping (Bakosurtanal) said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Bakosurtanal head Joenil Kahar said that provincial
\nadministrations would need maps and natural resource data of
\ntheir respective regions.<\/p>\n
The bulk of these services are expected to be provided by the
\nprivate sector because the central and regional administrations
\ncould not afford to do them by themselves, Joenil said on the
\nsidelines of the 10th ASEAN Federation of Land Surveying and
\nGeomatics (Flag) council meeting at Atlet Century Park Hotel.<\/p>\n
An official of the National Land Agency (BPN) separately said
\nthat investors, local and foreign, were invited to take part in
\nthe mapping and surveying business in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
"The government can only afford to provide standard maps, not
\nmaps for special purposes," BPN Deputy Head for Land Survey and
\nRegistration Kurdinanto Sarah said.<\/p>\n
Priority should be given to investors of ASEAN (Association of
\nSouth East Asian Nations), he said, adding that the 10 member
\ncountries would have to help each other in departing from being
\ntarget markets for foreign technology.<\/p>\n
"We propose the creation of a regional education and training
\ncenter on land surveying," Kurdinanto said.<\/p>\n
The center could be built in Indonesia, Malaysia or Brunei, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
He also said that, in the future, independent licensed
\nsurveyors must no longer depend on government projects, but must
\ncreate their own activities after which they could sell the
\nresults.<\/p>\n
"Up to now, most independent surveyors wait for government
\nprojects and funds," Kurdinanto, who is also chairman of the
\nIndonesian Surveyors Association (ISI), said.<\/p>\n
Joenil agreed that the skills of local surveyors must be
\nupgraded and a competency standard for the profession must be
\nformulated.<\/p>\n
"This morning (Saturday) we will compare our standardization
\nconcept with those of the other ASEAN members, and we will try to
\ncombine them together so there will be no disputes afterward,"
\nKurdinanto said.<\/p>\n
ASEAN Flag is a non-governmental organization which has been
\nrecognized by ASEAN since 1996. Members include individuals and
\nprofessional organizations from members of ASEAN. Abdul Majid bin
