        "content": "<p>Demand for land mapping and survey services seen rising<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Demand for land mapping and survey services is<br>\nlikely to grow this year as regions gain more autonomy from<br>\nJakarta, the National Coordinating Agency for Surveying and<br>\nMapping (Bakosurtanal) said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Bakosurtanal head Joenil Kahar said that provincial<br>\nadministrations would need maps and natural resource data of<br>\ntheir respective regions.<\/p>\n<p>The bulk of these services are expected to be provided by the<br>\nprivate sector because the central and regional administrations<br>\ncould not afford to do them by themselves, Joenil said on the<br>\nsidelines of the 10th ASEAN Federation of Land Surveying and<br>\nGeomatics (Flag) council meeting at Atlet Century Park Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>An official of the National Land Agency (BPN) separately said<br>\nthat investors, local and foreign, were invited to take part in<br>\nthe mapping and surveying business in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The government can only afford to provide standard maps, not<br>\nmaps for special purposes,&quot; BPN Deputy Head for Land Survey and<br>\nRegistration Kurdinanto Sarah said.<\/p>\n<p>Priority should be given to investors of ASEAN (Association of<br>\nSouth East Asian Nations), he said, adding that the 10 member<br>\ncountries would have to help each other in departing from being<br>\ntarget markets for foreign technology.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We propose the creation of a regional education and training<br>\ncenter on land surveying,&quot; Kurdinanto said.<\/p>\n<p>The center could be built in Indonesia, Malaysia or Brunei, he<br>\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that, in the future, independent licensed<br>\nsurveyors must no longer depend on government projects, but must<br>\ncreate their own activities after which they could sell the<br>\nresults.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Up to now, most independent surveyors wait for government<br>\nprojects and funds,&quot; Kurdinanto, who is also chairman of the<br>\nIndonesian Surveyors Association (ISI), said.<\/p>\n<p>Joenil agreed that the skills of local surveyors must be<br>\nupgraded and a competency standard for the profession must be<br>\nformulated.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This morning (Saturday) we will compare our standardization<br>\nconcept with those of the other ASEAN members, and we will try to<br>\ncombine them together so there will be no disputes afterward,&quot;<br>\nKurdinanto said.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN Flag is a non-governmental organization which has been<br>\nrecognized by ASEAN since 1996.
