        "content": "<p>JAKARTA - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and\nTechnology Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been demanded to serve 18 years in\nprison in a case of alleged corruption in the procurement of\nChromebook-based laptops.<\/p>\n<p>The Public Prosecutors also demand that Nadiem pay a fine of Rp1\nbillion and restitution amounting to a total of approximately Rp5.68\ntrillion.<\/p>\n<p>After the hearing, Nadiem expressed his disappointment and questioned\nthe magnitude of the demands imposed on him, even stating that the\ndemands were heavier than those in several other serious criminal\ncases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Requesting the panel of judges) To impose a prison sentence on the\nDefendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim therefore with a prison term of 18 years\nminus the period the Defendant has been in temporary detention, with an\norder for the Defendant to be immediately detained in the State\nDetention House,\u201d said the prosecutor when reading out the demands.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the prison sentence, the prosecutors also demand that\nNadiem pay a fine of Rp1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>If not paid, the fine will be replaced with imprisonment for 190\ndays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Restitution) constitutes the Defendant\u2019s assets that are\ndisproportionate to his lawful income or suspected to be from the\ncriminal act of corruption,\u201d said the prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors also state that if Nadiem does not have sufficient\nassets to pay the restitution, it will be replaced with a prison term of\nnine years.<\/p>\n<p>In their demands, the prosecutors also request that the evidence\nremains as stated in the demand letter and that the costs of the case\namounting to Rp10,000 be borne by the defendant.<\/p>\n<p>In the hearing, the prosecutors assessed that the procurement of\nChromebook-based laptops during the period 2020 to 2022 was carried out\nfor personal gain and impacted the quality of education in\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Defendant\u2019s actions in committing the criminal act of corruption\nin the education sector, which is a strategic sector for national\ndevelopment, have resulted in the hindrance of the quality and equity of\neducation for children in Indonesia,\u201d said the prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors also highlighted the increase in the defendant\u2019s\nassets, which is deemed disproportionate to his lawful income.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, the defendant\u2019s assets have experienced an increase that is\ndisproportionate to his lawful income or suspected to be from the\ncriminal act of corruption amounting to Rp4,871,469,603,758,\u201d said the\nprosecutor.<\/p>",
