Defiant PKB legislator dismissed: Muhaimin<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Awakening Party (PKB) stripped
\nAbdul Cholik Achmad of his position on Friday in the party's
\nboard of executives and its faction at the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR) for alleged insubordination.<\/p>\n
The party's deputy secretary-general Muhaimin Iskandar told
\nreporters that two other party members would face questioning
\nover their alleged presence in a meeting organized by PKB's
\ndismissed chairman Matori Abdul Djalil and Cholik at a hotel in
\nCentral Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The meeting, which was reportedly attended by nine people,
\nincluding the faction's chairman Taufiqurrahman Saleh, resulted
\nin a statement to accept the Special Session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) and propose a rival party, to be
\ncalled the PKB Reform.<\/p>\n
\"Abdul Cholik Achmad has been dismissed as the faction's
\nsecretary and the party's official in charge of education affairs
\nfor allegedly masterminding the meeting. But his party membership
\nis not revoked,\" Muhaimin said.<\/p>\n
He added that Agus Suphiat and Muchtar Nurjaya had been
\nsummoned to clarify their involvement in the secret meeting. The
\ntwo party members have not responded to the summons.<\/p>\n
Muhaimin said Taufiqurrahman and six other PKB legislators
\npresent in the secret meeting escaped disciplinary action because
\nthey did not sign the statement released after the gathering.<\/p>\n
Also attending Friday's plenary meeting were PKB acting
\nchairman Alwi Shihab, deputy chairpersons Arifin Junaidi and
\nKhofifah Indar Parawansa and other top executives, including
\nChotibul Umam Wiranu and Ali Masykur Musa.<\/p>\n
Muhaimin indicated that the party executives might reconsider
\na previous decision to suspend PKB factions in both the DPR and
\nMPR during a congress to be held from Aug. 4 through Aug. 6. The
\nplace of the event remains undecided, he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, Cholik, Agus and Mochtar told a media
\nconference that they accepted the MPR Special Session as a
\nconstitutional and democratic event to solve the conflict between
\nthe President and the House.<\/p>\n
\"Despite our faction's temporary suspension, we continue to
\nfunction as House legislators and Assembly members and we stay
\nhere to fight for the political aspirations of our constituents,\"
\nCholik said.<\/p>\n
PKB supported then president Abdurrahman' decree to dissolve
\nboth the DPR and MPR, hold an expedited general election and
\ndissolve the Golkar Party.<\/p>\n
Agus said that more PKB legislators would continue to work
\nwhen the House resumed its sitting on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n
MPR speaker Amien Rais appealed on Thursday to PKB legislators
\nto rejoin the legislative body as it will be restarting its
\ndeliberations on constitutional amendments.<\/p>\n
In the Central Java town of Purwokerto, chairman of the PKB
\nfaction in the local legislature Musaddad Bikry Nur announced on
\nThursday his faction had boycotted as of Wednesday all
\nlegislative activities in response to the party's decision to
\nsuspend its factions in the DPR and MPR. (45\/tso\/rms)<\/p>",
