Defamation case trial to go on<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta District Court decided
\nyesterday to continue trying a lawyer charged with defaming Akbar
\nTandjung, the minister of public housing.<\/p>\n
Heri S. Kolopaking is accused of spreading false information
\nlast year about what he called Akbar's illegal selling of a piece
\nof land belonging to his clients.<\/p>\n
In response to the defense lawyers' claim that only the
\nhonorary council of Ikadin, the advocates association, had the
\nright to reprimand a lawyer for his actions in defending his
\nclient, judge Tjok Darmowati said the court had legal authority
\nover the defendant.<\/p>\n
The judge also rejected the lawyers' claim that the
\nprosecution was careless in the indictment and had not said who
\nwas defamed.<\/p>\n
\"Akbar Tandjung was clearly mentioned in the indictment,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The indictment, read at the first hearing last month, said the
\ndefendant told a press conference in April 1996 that Akbar had
\nsold land without the owners' permission.<\/p>\n
