Death toll rises to 10 in Central Java landslide<\/p>\n
BREBES, Central Java (JP): Rescue workers recovered on Friday
\nthe body of another victim of Wednesday night's landslide in
\nWindu Sakti village, raising the number of confirmed dead to 10.<\/p>\n
The latest victim was identified as either Sumanto or Suwanto,
\nwho was believed to be in his mid-30s.<\/p>\n
His body was washed away by Margasari River and was discovered
\nsome seven kilometers from where the landslide occurred.<\/p>\n
Efforts to locate another 26 people still missing in the
\nincident were slowed and sometimes halted on Friday due to heavy
\nrains, which raised fears of more landslides.<\/p>\n
\"The Panyeuyan hills and surrounding land are prone to
\nlandslides during heavy rains. The land shakes now and then,\" a
\nrescuer said.<\/p>\n
Rescuers said an equivalent of about two-hectares of land slid
\ndown Kukuncung hill and through the village of Windu Sakti at
\nmidnight on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
A separate landslide also was reported in neighboring Gunung
\nJaya village on Thursday, leaving one person dead. The deceased
\nhas not yet been identified.<\/p>\n
All 240 residents of Gunung Jaya village have been evacuated
\nto neighboring villages, including the village of Tembong Raja
\nwhere residents of Windu Sakti also are being sheltered.<\/p>\n
Tembong Raja is approximately nine kilometers south of Windu
\nSakti.<\/p>\n
Central Java Governor Mardiyanto has pledged Rp 15 million to
\naid the villagers.<\/p>\n
Brebes Regent Tajuddin Nuraly earlier said his office had
\nallocated Rp 10 million to help the villagers, while the district
\nadministration office donated Rp 5 million in cash and medical
\nsupplies.<\/p>\n
Public kitchens have been set up to assist the landslide
\nsurvivors and residents of neighboring villages have donated food
\nand clothes.<\/p>\n
A new concern is that the mud from the landslide has blocked
\nmost waterways, causing them to flood the surrounding areas. Six
\ndistricts reportedly have been flooded.<\/p>\n
In the districts of Larangan, Brebes and Wanasari as many as
\n3,000 houses have been inundated.<\/p>\n
The water level has reached almost one meter in many spots,
\nAtmotansidiq, a Brebes regency employee, said.<\/p>\n
The flood waters also have destroyed an estimated 20,000
\nhectares of rice and onion fields.<\/p>\n
Atmotansidiq said Regent Tajuddin Nuraly blamed deforestation
\nfor the landslide.<\/p>\n
The regent had reportedly asked the local office of the
\nMinistry of Forestry to replant the forest in the area.<\/p>\n
A landslide also occurred in Klaten regency on Friday, leaving
\ntwo people dead.<\/p>\n
Klaten Police chief Lt. Col. Mustofa Hari Kuncoro identified
\nthe two victims as Mrs. Wiyono, 40, and Sudiyono, 25, both
\nresidents of Kendalsari village.<\/p>\n
\"The bodies are still buried in the mud. We need heavy
\nequipment to unearth them,\" Mustofa said.<\/p>\n
Torrential rains were blamed for the landslide.
