The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenhan) has\nstated that participants in the Basic Military Training (Latsarmil)\njoined voluntarily. This was conveyed by Kemenhan following the death of\nfour prospective managers for the Merah Putih Village\/Sub-district\nCooperative (KDKMP) and Merah Putih Fishermen\u2019s Village (KNMP)\nprogrammes while attending the Latsarmil for the Sarjana Penggerak\nPembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) programme.<\/p>\n
Head of the Defence Information Bureau (Karo Infohan) at Kemenhan,\nBrigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, claimed the SPPI programme is\npart of the government\u2019s effort to prepare human resources who possess\ncharacter, integrity, and leadership spirit to support national\ndevelopment through the Merah Putih Village\/Sub-district Cooperatives\nand Merah Putih Fishermen\u2019s Villages. \u201cAll participants joined this\nprogramme voluntarily through an established selection mechanism,\u201d Rico\ntold Republika on Friday.<\/p>\n
Rico also explained the incident involving Muhammad Rifki Renaldi\nGunawan, the fourth victim to die during the training. On 25 June, the\ndeceased experienced health complaints in the form of shortness of\nbreath and immediately received initial treatment from the unit\u2019s\nmedical team. After his condition gradually improved, he briefly resumed\nactivities. \u201cHowever, in the afternoon his condition deteriorated again,\nso he was immediately referred to RSAU dr. Esnawan Antariksa for further\nmedical treatment,\u201d Rico stated.<\/p>\n
After being referred to the hospital, the deceased promptly received\nintensive medical care from a team of doctors, including treatment in\nthe Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite optimal medical efforts, the\ndeceased was pronounced dead on 26 June 2026 at 00:28 WIB. \u201cPrior to\njoining the programme, the deceased, Muhammad Rifki Renaldi Gunawan, had\nundergone the selection stages in accordance with applicable\nregulations, including a health examination, and was declared eligible\nto attend the education,\u201d Rico said.<\/p>\n
In response to this incident, Rico stated that Kemenhan, together\nwith the education organisers, has provided assistance to the deceased\u2019s\nfamily, including the repatriation of the body to his home region.\nKemenhan is also assisting in fulfilling the participant\u2019s entitlements\naccording to prevailing regulations. \u201cIn connection with this incident,\nKemenhan, together with the National Selection Committee and education\norganisers, is continuously conducting a thorough evaluation of the SPPI\nProgramme implementation,\u201d Rico said.<\/p>\n
Rico also detailed the steps being taken, which include strengthening\nthe health selection process, early detection of participants\u2019 medical\nconditions, and increasing supervision by health personnel during the\neducation. \u201cWe are conducting tracing of participants with similar\ncomplaints, as well as refining health handling procedures across all\neducation units,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
