Death toll in Depok train mishaps triples<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The number of victims, mostly students,
\nfatally crushed by passing trains in Depok tripled this year to
\n22 from only eight people in 1993, according to a police officer.<\/p>\n
"It's high time everybody, the public and officers of the
\nstate-owned railway company Perumka, focus on ways of how to
\nreduce the high death toll," Depok police chief Lt. Col. Sisno
\nAdiwinoto told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
Perumka officers could not be reached as of yesterday
\nevening for comment on the alarming figure.<\/p>\n
According to Sisno, most of the victims were fatally crushed
\nafter falling from speeding trains.<\/p>\n
"Their bodies were found later by local residents, who
\nimmediately reported the cases to the nearby police office," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The rising death toll of people crushed by the moving trains
\nin Depok is caused mainly by the bad attitude on the part of the
\npassengers themselves, and by Perumka's inadequacy to secure the
\nsafety of their passengers.<\/p>\n
Students in uniform stand on carriage roofs, while others
\npurposely stand or put their feet between the electric doors of
\nthe crowded trains.<\/p>\n
Sisno acknowledged that it is not an easy job to reduce the
\nhigh death toll. "However Perumka's determination to continuously
\nwarn passengers about the danger of clowning on trains is needed
\nto help solve the problem," he added.<\/p>\n
He also urged the public to be more aware of how to behave
\non trains for the sake of their own safety.<\/p>\n
Sisno strongly believes there are a great number of
\nunreported cases involving light or serious wounds.(bsr)<\/p>",
