Sanurip upheld<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Surabaya High Military Tribunal in East Java<br>\nhas upheld a death sentence against an Army Special Forces<br>\nofficer convicted of killing 16 people in a shooting spree in<br>\nTimika, Irian Jaya, last year.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesman for Trikora Regional Military Command, Col.<br>\nMangatas Pandjaitan, said the tribunal upheld the sentence<br>\nagainst Second Lt. Sanurip on June 18.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that Sanurip&apos;s defense lawyers would appeal to<br>\nthe Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Sanurip was sentenced to death by the Jayapura Military<br>\nTribunal on April 23. He was found guilty of killing 16 people<br>\nand injuring 10 others in a shooting spree at Timika Airport last<br>\nyear.<\/p>\n<p>The incident took place on the morning of April 15 last year<br>\nafter Sanurip became involved in a dispute with a fellow officer.<br>\nSanurip reportedly grabbed a machine gun and sprayed soldiers and<br>\ncivilian workers with bullets.<\/p>\n<p>Sanurip was also given a dishonorable discharge with all<br>\nprevious citations awarded to him removed.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, Sanurip&apos;s lawyers claimed that the defendant<br>\nsuffered from severe stress after spending months in the Irian<br>\nJaya jungle.<\/p>\n<p>Reports said Sanurip was infected with malaria.
