Death row convicts not forgotten<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: A group of lawyers will leave for
\nMalaysia today to seek first-hand information on five Indonesian
\nworkers on death row in the neighboring country.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the lawyers, Ramdlon Naning, said yesterday
\nthat they would be meeting with both the condemned men and with
\nMalaysian officials during the three-day visit.<\/p>\n
The five workers are among 13 Indonesians convicted of
\ncommitting serious offenses, such as murder and drug trafficking,
\nin Malaysia. The other eight have had their sentences commuted to
\nlife imprisonment.<\/p>\n
Ramdlon said the visit had been inspired by a letter received
\nby the Indonesian Bar Association from one of the men awaiting
\nexecution, Markandi bin Dul Samad.<\/p>\n
"We do not mean to interfere in the Malaysian judicial system.
\nWe just want to help Indonesian citizens who are facing the death
\npenalty in a neighboring country," he said. (har)<\/p>",
