Dead Indonesian gets PhD in Japan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An Indonesian national has become the first
\nperson to get a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Japan after his
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
Halwany Microb, an Indonesian education and culture ministry
\nofficial who died of cancer on July 3 last year, was posthumously
\nconferred his PhD in archeology at Chiba University, Japan, on
\nMarch 26.<\/p>\n
The news was conveyed by the university's Professor Nakamura
\nwho visited Jakarta on Monday.<\/p>\n
Nakamura said the conferring of the academic title to a dead
\nman had stirred a hot debate in Japan, which does not have a
\nregulation on the matter.<\/p>\n
Halwany, born in the West Java town of Banten on Feb. 14,
\n1938, died before completing his dissertation titled Historical
\nReconstruction and Modern Development of the Islamic City of
\nBanten, Indonesia, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Nakamura said he added the finishing touches to the
\ndissertation which a team of professors agreed was good enough to
\nearn Halwany the doctorate.<\/p>\n
He was considered the best among the three archeology students
\nat the university who graduated in the same period.<\/p>\n
Halwany, whose last stint was as an expert staffer at the
\nNational Archeology Agency in Jakarta, continued his post
\ngraduate study in Chiba University after getting his master's
\ndegree in Pennsylvania University in 1995. (pan)<\/p>",
