Dayaks want governor out<\/p>\n
PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: Dayak tribal leaders said
\non Wednesday they wanted outgoing Central Kalimantan Governor
\nWarsito Rasman to leave the province as soon as possible, saying
\nhis five-year term was more than enough and his presence was no
\nlonger needed in the province.<\/p>\n
Dayak Traditional Council chairman Walman Narang told the
\nprovincial legislative council that Warsito's term expired in
\nJuly and he should leave the province as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
Walman said the Dayak people rejected last week's decision by
\nthe Ministry of Home Affairs extending Warsito's term until the
\nelection of a new governor.<\/p>\n
"Please do not add to the people's suffering; we have been
\nfooled by Warsito for five years," Antara quoted Walman as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
Warsito, who was then a senior official at the Ministry of
\nHome Affairs, won a controversial election to become governor of
\nthe province in 1994.<\/p>\n
The election was initially won by then North Barito regent
\nApuk Nihin, a native Dayak. Then minister of home affairs Moch.
\nYogie S.M. annulled Apuk's victory and ordered another election,
\nwhich was won by Warsito.<\/p>\n
Two months ago, President B.J. Habibie appointed Apuk Central
\nKalimantan's provincial secretary in a move which sparked
