Dayak, Madurese women hold meeting<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Members of a communication forum for Dayak and
\nMadurese women, or Dara Arum as the forum is named, gathered here
\nin Yogyakarta on Saturday for a six-day meeting to discuss peace-
\nkeeping efforts between the two conflicting communities.<\/p>\n
Held under the central theme of \"Strengthening the Role and
\nCapacity of Dayak and Madurese Women to Build Peace,\" the meeting
\nin Yogyakarta is the forum's second national consolidation
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
\"Through the meeting we would like to urge the government to
\nprovide more room for women to actively participate in the peace
\nmaking process in Indonesia,\" Yooke Adelina, an organizer of the
\nevent said.<\/p>\n
Established in February 2003 following the 2001 ethnic
\nconflict between Madurese and Dayak communities in the Central
\nKalimantan town of Sampit, Dara Arum aimed at helping create
\npeace between the two conflicting ethnic communities through
\nvarious activities involving women.<\/p>\n
So far, according to Yooke, women have always been
\nmarginalized in such efforts, regardless of their strategic role
\nin the family, as it is mostly women who are responsible for the
\neducation of their children as well as implanting moral values
\nwithin the family.<\/p>\n
Some 40 members of Dara Arum from both Central Kalimantan and
\nMadura are participating in the meeting, which will close on June
