        "content": "<p>Dayak dialect faces extinction<\/p>\n<p>PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: The Dayak dialect, the<br>\nmother tongue of the province's natives, is facing extinction<br>\nbecause youths are ashamed to use it, a scholar said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>T.H. Pasaribu said the Dayak dialect is increasingly being<br>\nreplaced by the Banjar dialect, the language medium for business<br>\nactivities between ethnic groups in Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>Pasaribu did not say why young Dayakese were ashamed of their<br>\ndialect but it is understood that Dayakese, especially those<br>\nliving in the hinterland, are stereotyped as \"backward\".<\/p>\n<p>\"If the current trend continues, the dialect will become<br>\nextinct in the foreseeable future,\" said the expert on Dayak<br>\nculture from Palangka Raya University.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the decline of the Dayak dialect has been<br>\nmarkedly noticeable over the past four years, since the Dayak<br>\ntribe was no longer isolated from the outside world, Antara<br>\nreported.
