Data on RI exports to S'pore unclear<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government still faces difficulty in
\ncalculating actual exports to Singapore because the neighboring
\ncountry is still unwilling to issue data on its bilateral trade
\nwith Indonesia, an official says.<\/p>\n
A senior trade official at the Indonesian Embassy in
\nSingapore, Sjabirin M. Bakri, said Saturday that the absence of
\nSingapore's trade data caused difficulties in calculating the
\nactual value of Indonesian exports to the neighboring country.<\/p>\n
\"The data issued by (Indonesia's) Central Bureau of Statistics
\n(BPS) is the only official data available in calculating the
\ntrade volume between Indonesia and Singapore,\" he told Antara in
\nBandung.<\/p>\n
He estimated that the volume of Indonesian exports was much
\nhigher than figures stated by BPS because, he said, a large
\namount of smuggled goods were not included.<\/p>\n
\"It's one of the problems the (Singapore) embassy has to
\nface,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sabirin said that another problem the Indonesian embassy in
\nSingapore faced in promoting Indonesian exports was the lack of
\nup-to-date business information, such as company profiles,
\ncommodity profiles and trade directories about Indonesian
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
Such corporate information was very much needed in promoting
\nIndonesian exports, he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's non-oil exports to Singapore face a lot of
\ncompetition from Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the
\nUnited States and Japan.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's export volume reached US$4.6 billion last year,
\ncomprising $732 billion in oil and gas products and $3.9 billion
\nin non-oil products.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's main exports to Singapore are telecommunications
\nequipment, nonferrous metal, electric machinery, tea, coffee,
\ncacao, vegetables, fruits, fish and shells. (08)<\/p>",
