        "content": "<p>Amid rising industrial investment and demands for sustainable\npractices, environmental management has become a crucial factor\ndetermining the competitiveness of industrial estates. Modern industrial\nzones can no longer rely solely on complete infrastructure and utilities\nbut must also build data-driven environmental governance, supported by\nlong-term monitoring and close collaboration between government,\nacademia, business, and the community. This perspective emerged during a\nWorld Environment Day 2026 commemoration organised by PT Berkah Kawasan\nManyar Sejahtera (BKMS), the manager of the Java Integrated Industrial\nand Ports Estate (JIIPE) and the Gresik Special Economic Zone (KEK). The\nevent served as a synergy platform for the Gresik Regency Government,\nacademics, estate tenants, and coastal communities. Gresik Vice Regent\nAsluchul Alif stressed that the commemoration must be a momentum for\nreal action, not just ceremony. \u2018Collaboration is needed between\nindustry, coastal communities, and all stakeholders. We appreciate the\nsynergy that has been built, including social security protection for\nfishermen and coastal area rehabilitation through mangrove planting,\u2019 he\nsaid. Professor Eddy Setiadi Soedjono, an environmental expert from\nUniversitas Airlangga, highlighted the importance of objectivity in\nassessing environmental conditions. He noted that the quality of waters\nand coastal ecosystems is influenced by many interacting factors and\ncannot be assessed from just one parameter or a single observation.\n\u2018Long-term monitoring, periodic data, and multidisciplinary studies are\nneeded before drawing conclusions about the environmental condition of\nan area,\u2019 he explained. This data-driven approach serves as the\nfoundation for ensuring that environmental management policies are\nmeasurable and sustainable. In line with this, the Head of the Gresik\nRegency Environmental Agency, Sri Subaidah, appreciated BKMS\u2019s concrete\nactions, such as planting thousands of mangrove trees in the Kalimireng\narea to mitigate abrasion and adapt to climate change. As part of its\ncommitment to the ecosystem and the welfare of surrounding communities,\nJIIPE carried out a series of rehabilitation activities during the\ncommemoration, including the distribution of ecosystem aid in\nKalimireng. The Head of the Gresik Regency Marine and Fisheries Agency,\nArief Witjaksono, expressed hope that the release of fish seeds would\nmean fishermen no longer need to travel far out to sea, as the\navailability of catch around the area increases. Support also came from\nthe Chairman of the Gresik Regency KTNA, Hamzah Takim, and community\nfigure Isharul, who viewed the initiative as very positive for the\nsustainability of the fishermen\u2019s catchment area. Beyond ecosystem\nrehabilitation, JIIPE continues to strengthen its environmental\ninfrastructure in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance\n(ESG) principles. The estate currently operates a Reduce, Reuse, and\nRecycle Waste Processing Site (TPS3R). PT BKMS Director Bambang Soetiono\nrevealed that the company is preparing to develop this facility into an\nIntegrated Waste Processing Site (TPST), aiming to increase management\ncapacity independently, integratively, and sustainably in line with the\ngrowth of operational activities. \u2018Going forward, the competitiveness of\nindustrial estates will be determined not only by infrastructure and\ninvestment but also by the credibility of their environmental\ngovernance.
