Data difficult to get at Bapepam<\/p>\n

The large-scale promotional activities being conducted by
\nparticipants in the capital market to introduce the stock
\nexchange to the public is being hampered by the \"rules\" of the
\nCapital Market Supervising Agency (Bapepam).<\/p>\n
I had difficulty obtaining data which I needed to do my
\nresearch paper, even though I had a letter of introduction from
\nmy university (albeit only a photocopy, because I left the
\noriginal behind in Surakarta).<\/p>\n
I need more data regarding the latest education program for
\nstock brokers. I tried to obtain it from the Jakarta Association
\nof Stock Brokers, which did not have the information.<\/p>\n
I was advised to contact the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX)
\nwhere I contacted the membership division, but again without any
\nresults.<\/p>\n
My only remaining hope was Bapepam. But, even armed with a
\nphotocopy of my university's letter, I was unable to obtain the
\ndata. What was most regrettable was that Bapepam's public
\nrelations officer (Mr. Darsono) failed to take me to the
\nauthorized department. Instead I was advised to go to the Bapepam
\nlibrary.<\/p>\n
Here, too, the photocopy of the letter I carried was not
\naccepted for forwarding to whichever official was in charge. The
\nreason given was that it was only a photostat copy and that it
\nwas addressed to the Head of the Public Relations Department
\nrather than the Head of Bapepam. (Introductions are usually made
\nthrough the public relations departments of official agencies).<\/p>\n
A letter from the Jakarta Social-Political Affairs Office,
\nagain, was not enough to convince Bapepam that I really was a
\nstudent of Universitas 11 Maret in Surakarta. It is not possible
\nfor me to go back to Surakarta to get the original letter because
\nof considerations of cost and work (I cannot leave my work for
\ntoo long).<\/p>\n
All this is most regrettable to me. How can the capital market
\nbe effectively popularized among the public when the proper
\nagencies (such as Bapepam) are making it difficult for people to
\nobtain information.<\/p>\n
Still, I owe the brokers at the JSX my gratitude for their
\nwillingness to fill out my questionnaire. The same goes for the
\nmembership section of the JSX. It is to be hoped that the
\ncooperation extended by those two parties will help nurture the
\ninterest of students and members of the public to learn more
\nabout the workings of the capital market.<\/p>\n
