Danger of disintegration<\/p>\n
Speaking at a meeting of the Association of Indonesian Moslem
\nIntellectuals on Saturday, the State Minister of National
\nDevelopment Planning\/Chairman of the Indonesian National Planning
\nBoard, Ginandjar Kartasasmita, warned that the factor that
\nendangered the nation's stability and unity the most, at present,
\nwas no longer problems such as religion and ethnicity, but rather
\neconomic and social disparity.<\/p>\n
Ginandjar said that if only a small section of our society
\nenjoyed the benefits of progress, while the greater part remained
\nleft behind, the danger of disintegration would be greater than
\nat the time when all Indonesians were poor, however advanced our
\nnation may be.<\/p>\n
We would like to underline this view, because the danger of
\ndisintegration--which we have always tended to see as stemming
\nfrom our ethnic, religious or other age-old aspects of
\ndiversity--actually stems from economic and social disparities.
\nBy adopting an egalitarian strategy, that attacks the roots of
\nthose disparities, we are confident that our national diversity
\ncan actually be transformed into a force that can help us to
\naccomplish our development efforts successfully.<\/p>\n
