TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Danantara BPI Executive Body Rosan\nPerkasa Roeslani has announced plans to establish the Danantara Trust\nFund. He also invited the Gates Foundation (formerly the Bill &\nMelinda Gates Foundation) to participate in the collaboration.<\/p>\n
Rosan said the Danantara Trust Fund could accommodate 1 to 2.5 per\ncent of the dividends received by Danantara each year. He indicated the\nTrust Fund is projected to receive funding of up to US$1 billion.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have already run the numbers. At the beginning of the year we\nwill indeed put in US$100 million first, and we have seen that the\nfigures suggest within 5 to 6 years we could allocate US$1 billion to\nthe Danantara Trust Fund,\u201d Rosan said at a press conference at the\nPresidential Palace in Jakarta after meeting global philanthropist Bill\nGates on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
So what is the difference between Danantara and the Danantara Trust\nFund?<\/p>\n
Understanding the Danantara Trust Fund<\/p>\n
Rosan explained that the Danantara Trust Fund is Danantara\u2019s\nphilanthropic body. It will operate to implement empowerment programmes\nacross various fields, including education and health.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis collaboration plan is what we have already discussed with the\nGates Foundation, for them to also jointly contribute funds alongside\nus,\u201d said Rosan, who currently also serves as Minister of Investment and\nDownstreaming\/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).<\/p>\n
Rosan revealed that the plan had been communicated to the Gates\nFoundation on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. The desire to collaborate was\nreiterated by Rosan during a discussion session between President\nPrabowo Subianto and Bill Gates at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on\nWednesday, 7 May 2025.<\/p>\n
Rosan claimed the potential for collaboration between the Danantara\nTrust Fund and the Gates Foundation was wide open. The same offer was\nconveyed by Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin to Bill Gates, who\nsuggested the Danantara Trust Fund would likely resemble Temasek Trust\nin Singapore.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope you can sit on the board structure. You could sit alongside\nRay Dalio, your friend as well. You and Ray Dalio also sit together on\nthe board of a Chinese philanthropy body in education. Mr Rosan with\nDanantara has sufficient budget as a catalyst,\u201d said Budi.<\/p>\n
Regarding the collaboration, Rosan said he would discuss it further\nwith Bill Gates\u2019s team. \u201cWe will continue the discussions with his team.\nWe have already agreed. From his team, two people have been appointed \u2014\nMs Pipa and Mr Jamal from Seattle, and another from Singapore,\u201d Rosan\nsaid at the press conference.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Danantara is a body that carries out government duties in\nthe management of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) as stipulated in the\nLaw on BUMN. This definition is set out in Government Regulation (PP)\nNumber 10 of 2025 on the Organisation and Governance of BPI\nDanantara.<\/p>\n
Danantara has the status of a legal entity wholly owned by the\nGovernment of Indonesia. In carrying out its duties, Danantara has the\nauthority to manage dividends from investment holdings, operational\nholdings, and BUMN; approve additions and\/or reductions in capital\nparticipation in BUMN sourced from dividend management; and establish\ninvestment and operational holdings together with the BUMN Minister.<\/p>\n
Danantara\u2019s authority also includes approving proposals for\nwrite-offs of BUMN assets submitted by investment or operational\nholdings together with the BUMN Minister, as well as granting and\nreceiving loans or pledging assets with presidential approval.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo ratify and consult with the relevant committee of the House of\nRepresentatives on the corporate work plan and budget (RKAP) of\ninvestment and operational holdings,\u201d reads Article 4 paragraph (2)\nletter f of PP Number 10 of 2025.<\/p>\n
President Prabowo has previously estimated that Danantara\u2019s asset\nvalue could reach US$1 trillion, or more than Rp16,800 trillion. He said\nDanantara\u2019s assets currently stand at around US$900 billion.<\/p>\n
