PORTAL7.CO.ID - The Investment Management Agency (BPI) Danantara has\nconfirmed negotiations to take over the share ownership held by the\nFrench company, Eramet, in PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN), located in North\nMaluku. This step is part of the government\u2019s efforts to increase local\nparticipation in the management of strategic national nickel\nresources.<\/p>\n
The discussion process regarding this potential acquisition began at\nthe Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 12 May 2026. The\ndiscussion was attended by relevant parties as a follow-up to the\ngovernment\u2019s commitment to strengthening the global electric vehicle\n(EV) battery ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Danantara\u2019s CEO, Rosan Roeslani, who also serves as Minister of\nInvestment and Downstreaming\/Head of BKPM, expressed Danantara\u2019s\nopenness to playing a role as a strong local partner in various\nstrategic investments in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are basically open to discussions and talks regarding investments\nin Indonesia, and Danantara can be a strong local partner as well. We\nare open, of course. We are also discussing with Eramet,\u201d explained\nRosan at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday\n(12\/5\/2026).<\/p>\n
Currently, the share ownership structure of PT Weda Bay Nickel is\ndominated by China\u2019s Tsingshan Group with a 51.2% stake and Eramet with\n37.8%. Meanwhile, PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) Tbk or Antam holds only a\nminority stake of 10% in the company.<\/p>\n
This acquisition negotiation step is also in line with the previous\nagreement reached between President Joko Widodo and French President\nEmmanuel Macron regarding the establishment of a joint investment\nplatform. The agreement aims to integrate international operational\nstandards with economic efficiency in mine management.<\/p>\n
Danantara Indonesia\u2019s Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Pandu Sjahrir,\nemphasised that this collaboration is designed to ensure long-term\nfinancing certainty for strategic nickel downstream projects deemed\nimportant by the state.<\/p>\n
Pandu Sjahrir added that combining Eramet\u2019s technical expertise with\nDanantara\u2019s financial support will enhance the competitiveness of\nIndonesia\u2019s nickel downstream industry on the global stage. \u201cThis\npartnership reflects a commitment to promoting world-class nickel\ndownstream investments in Indonesia, which is one of the main pillars in\nstrengthening national industrial competitiveness.
