        "content": "<p>Danang completes jail term<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Danang Kukuh Wardoyo, an office worker of the<br>\nunlicensed Independen magazine, regained his freedom yesterday<br>\nafter completing 20 months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Strangely enough, I felt a tinge of sadness when I walked out<br>\nof the Tangerang penitentiary, leaving behind the routine that<br>\nseemed like eternity,&quot; Danang said yesterday at a small<br>\ncelebration thrown by colleagues for him at Tempo Cafe.<\/p>\n<p>His first priority is now to go to his home village in Pare,<br>\nKediri regency in East Java, to see his parents, he said. &quot;They<br>\nknow I am not guilty of any shameful acts.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Danang is one of three Independen staff convicted for their<br>\nroles in producing and distributing copies of Independen last<br>\nyear. They were all found guilty of sowing hatred against the<br>\ngovernment through the magazine. The other two were journalists<br>\nAhmad Taufik and Eko Maryadi, each currently serving a three-year<br>\njail term.<\/p>\n<p>Danang spent the last 20 months in four different places: a<br>\ncell at Jakarta Police Headquarters, and in penitentiaries at<br>\nPondok Bambu, Salemba and Tangerang.<\/p>\n<p>The magazine was published by the Alliance of Independent<br>\nJournalists (AJI) which was established in 1994 after the banning<br>\nof three Indonesian newsweeklies Tempo, DeTik and Editor.<\/p>\n<p>AJI leaders said they were looking for a scholarship for<br>\nDanang whose detention has prevented him from going to<br>\nuniversity.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We feel that it is our responsibility to look for a<br>\nscholarship because he went to jail for our cause,&quot; an AJI member<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Former Tempo editor Fikri Jufri, who was present at the<br>\nhomecoming ceremony, congratulated Danang for having passed &quot;one<br>\nof life&apos;s difficult exams.&quot; (14)<\/p>",
