Damage reports on quake come in<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The earthquake that shook Jakarta and much of
\nWest Java Monday afternoon has damaged scores of homes, schools
\nand other public property in the south of the province.<\/p>\n
The areas most affected were the Cibaliung, Panimbang,
\nCimanggu, Sumur, Taman Jaya and South Banten districts and
\nPandeglang regency, Antara said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Measuring 6.0 in the open-ended Richter scale, the quake
\nstruck at 3:05 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. Its epicenter was
\nbelow the Indian Ocean sea bed, about 300 kilometers southwest of
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
In South Banten, the district closest to the epicenter,
\nPandeglang Regent H. Yitno led a team of investigators that found
\nseveral offices, homes and elementary school buildings severely
\ndamaged.<\/p>\n
In Cibaliung district, 13 kilometers south of Pandeglang, the
\ndistrict head's official residences, a doctors surgery, local
\ngovernment offices, a police headquarters, a madrasah (Islamic
\nschool), houses and a public health center had been severely
\ndamaged. Walls had cracked, support beams collapsed, roof tiles
\nscattered and buildings slipped sideways.<\/p>\n
Sukajadi village in Cibaliung district reported that nine
\nhomes had been badly damaged, four elementary school buildings
\nhad collapsed and 11 homes suffered light damaged.<\/p>\n
In Panimbang district, six elementary schools and the
\nresidence of the Mekar Jaya elementary school headmaster had been
\ndamaged.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, 570 elementary school students in Panimbang,
\nSumur and Cibaliung districts were continuing their studies,
\nPanimbang's district head Agus Muladi said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Uus Sukandi, a teacher at a local elementary school said 39
\nsecond-grade students had joined classes of first-grade students.<\/p>\n
Some of the seaside houses around Bayah beach, Panggrangan,
\nMalingping and Binuangeun in Lebak regency, South Banten
\ndistrict, had lost roofing tiles.<\/p>\n
The authorities have not yet established how many were injured
\nin the earthquake.<\/p>\n
\"We continue to search this area for further damage, despite
\nonly seeing scattered roof tiles,\" the head of Lebak's social
\nservices, Gofar, said.<\/p>\n
Officials in Pandeglang continue to search for damage to
\norganize repairs and see about distributing funds for rebuilding.<\/p>\n
Teams investigating the damage are hampered by the vast
\ndistances they have to cover and poor access to telephones.<\/p>\n
The earthquake caused panic across Jakarta and in West Java.
\nThousands spilled out of high rise buildings, fighting their way
\ndown emergency stairs. In Jakarta, the quake caused various
