Dai's future in legislators' hands<\/p>\n

A joint team, comprising members of Commission I and
\nCommission II of the House of Representatives (DPR), will
\ncommence discussions on Friday regarding the nomination of Comr.
\nGen. Da'i Bachtiar as the new National Police chief.<\/p>\n
\"The team will commence its work after Friday's prayer
\nsession,\" House Deputy Speaker Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno said
\nafter presiding over a meeting of the Deliberation Body (Bamus)
\nhere on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The result of the assessment will be announced to the public
\nduring a plenary session on Nov. 29.<\/p>\n
The schedule was unveiled when a group of people from
\nBondowoso, East Java, urged the DPR to reject the nomination of
\nDa'i, alleging that he had a poor track record.<\/p>\n
The group demanded that a legal process be carried out on Da'i
\nfor his suspected involvement in the fatal shooting of five
\nprotesters in Bondowoso in September last year.<\/p>\n
Besides claiming the five lives, six people were injured when
\npolice officers opened fire on people protesting in front of the
\npolice office. Da'i was East Java Police chief at the time.<\/p>\n
The delegation, which included family members of victims of
\nthe shooting, called for legal and moral accountability for both
\nDa'i and former Bondowoso Police chief Supt. Marwoto Soeto, who
\nhad ordered the shooting.<\/p>\n
\"We strongly reject the nomination of Comr. Gen. Da'i Bachtiar
\nto become chief of the National Police until he presents his
\naccountability in relation to that incident,\" said Jumali, one of
\nthe protesters.<\/p>\n
Responding to the demand, a member of Commission II, Sutanto,
\nvowed that his commission would immediately send a request to
\nNational Police chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro to continue the legal
\nprocess.<\/p>\n
\"We will also have a working meeting with the police chief on
\nDec. 1,\" Sutanto said.<\/p>",
