Dairi villagers take their case to Feisal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Villagers from the Dairi regency in North
\nSumatra took their case of a land dispute that turned violent to
\nArmed Forces Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung yesterday.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the villagers and their supporters met with
\nFeisal, although only for a brief period, after an all day quest
\nthat first took them to the Armed Forces (ABRI) headquarters on
\nJl. Merdeka Barat and then to the House of Representatives (DPR).<\/p>\n
They found the general at the DPR building where he was
\nholding a hearing with Commission I.<\/p>\n
They waited patiently until the hearing was over and then
\nforced their way through the mob of reporters trying to interview
\nFeisal as he was leaving the House.<\/p>\n
Some of the Dairi villagers managed to shake hands with
\nFeisal. One old woman even managed a peck on the general's cheek.<\/p>\n
Feisal responded that he would look into their case, which was
\nalso discussed by legislators during the hearing.<\/p>\n
The villagers came with a petition which they had hoped to
\npresent to Feisal. The petition was their attempt to draw his
\nattention to their allegation that the local military in Dairi
\nhad been biased in their handling of the dispute.<\/p>\n
Last night, supporters of the Dairi villagers said they hope
\nto meet with Feisal again today in order to explain their
\nposition in greater detail.<\/p>\n
The villagers are from Parbuluan where a land conflict has
\nbeen brewing in recent weeks between the villagers and a private
\nplantation company which has been trying to buy their land.<\/p>\n
Even the villagers are split on the issue. One camp endorses
\nthe sale while another opposes it. The conflict became ugly in
\nwhen the opposing groups recently clashed, leaving a number of
\nvillagers injured.<\/p>\n
