Daimler-Benz and ABB eye Asia<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Swiss-Swedish conglomerate Asea Brown Boveri
\nLtd. and Germany's Daimler-Benz AG, which are to merge their
\nrailway activities, hope to compete strongly for work in Asia, an
\nABB official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Paul Ziegler, head of the ABB Group of Companies Singapore,
\nsaid here that the merger would give the two companies added
\nstrength and technology expertise when they bid for a proposed
\nextension of Singapore's underground railway.<\/p>\n
\"Regionally, it will continue to bring its expertise to
\nMalaysia and also to Thailand, which is looking to ease Bangkok's
\ntraffic situation with the introduction of mass rapid transit
\nsystems,\" Ziegler said in a statement.<\/p>\n
He said the new joint-venture company will be in a strong
\nposition when it bids for work in the region.<\/p>\n
The European Commission on Wednesday gave the go-ahead for the
\nplanned merger of the railway activities of the Zurich-based ABB
\nand the Stuttgart-based Daimler-Benz.<\/p>\n
The new joint venture, to be named ABB Daimler-Benz
\nTransportation, will be formally established by January 1, 1996.<\/p>\n
The company will be the \"world's most complete provider of
\nrailway systems\" with a product range including electric and
\ndiesel locomotives, high-speed trains, inter-city and regional
\ntrains, trams and underground trains, ABB said.<\/p>",
