Czech, local firms to build clinker plant<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): PSP Company, a major Czech manufacturer of
\nindustrial machinery, and PT Balik Papan Daya Semen of Indonesia
\nagreed yesterday to jointly construct a clinker plant in East
\nKalimantan.<\/p>\n
The signing of the memorandum of understanding was witnessed
\nby visiting Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus.<\/p>\n
The Czech company also signed a memorandum of understanding
\nwith Nitro Business Consultant Group, allowing the latter to
\nprovide technical assistance for GSP's operation in the country.<\/p>\n
Mario Teguh, an executive of the Czech consulting firm, said
\nthat the cement plant to be established by PSP and Balik Papan
\nDaya Semen will annually produce around 300,000 tons of clinker,
\nmaterial used to make cement.<\/p>\n
Some 75 percent the plant's products will be exported to
\nneighboring countries and the remainder will be sold to local
\ncement producers, he said.<\/p>\n
He declined to reveal the investment commitment of the new
\njoint venture but estimated that a cement plant with a production
\ncapacity of one million tons would require a fresh investment of
\nbetween US$180 and $200 million.<\/p>\n
Mario also said that PSP Company is still negotiating with
\nlocal companies to establish three cement factories in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\"One of the planned factories will be in Java and the other
\ntwo outside Java,\" he said. He refused to provide details of the
\nplanned factories.<\/p>\n
Some provinces in Indonesia are short of cement supplies and
\nprices, therefore, have increased to levels far higher than price
\nreferences set by the government.<\/p>\n
The Czech prime minister, who arrived here Monday for a three-
\nday visit, offered Indonesia the chance to cooperate in the
\nconstruction of power generation plants, steel mills and
\nindustrial machinery plants.<\/p>\n
The offer was made during the prime minister's meeting with
\nPresident Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Minister\/State
\nSecretary Moerdiono said that the two heads of state also
\ndiscussed the possibility of enhancing bilateral trade
\ncooperation.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono said that the Czech prime minister offered Indonesia
\nto use his country as the gateway for Indonesian exports to
