Cycling association declines brothers' offer<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Cycling Association said
\nyesterday it would not need athletes who are unwilling to fight
\nfor the 19th SEA Games, to be held here in October, because they
\nwould be a bad influence on other athletes.<\/p>\n
Sofian Ruzian, the association's official, said Monday the
\nassociation was commenting on national cyclists Herry Janto
\nSetiawan and Hengky Setiawan, who had confirmed their
\nparticipation in the Games to training director Djoko Pramono on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Herry, Hengky and another cyclist Tubagus Maulana had
\nsubmitted a resignation letter to the association because of
\ntheir inability to combine the busy cycling schedule and their
\njobs.<\/p>\n
But Djoko urged the association to arrange a new program for
\nthem if it did not have adequate substitute riders for the Games.<\/p>\n
The association's Secretary-General Didi Sedijanto said he has
\nnot heard any wish from the National Sports Council to take the
\nathletes back.<\/p>\n
"We had explained the problem last week to Pak Djoko that we
\nwould have adequate substitutes for them. Pak Djoko had
\nunderstood the problem and the case was closed. If it appears
\nagain, I have no idea," Didi said.<\/p>\n
Didi said if Herry and Hengky rejoin the centralized training
\nprogram, their presence could create uncomfortable conditions at
\ntraining sessions, which had been going for two months.<\/p>\n
"Herry and Hengky can join the training but we must consider
\nthe teamwork that has been created. How about the budget for
\nthem?" Didi said.<\/p>\n
Antara reported the association's chairman Harry Sapto was
\nvery upset about both athletes' comments in newspapers. Their
\ncomments were thought to underestimate the organization.<\/p>\n
"Pak Harry urged them to apologize to the association in
\nnewspapers," Didi said.<\/p>\n
"Herry and Hengky still have to undergo physical tests and
\nthey aren't automatically in the main team," he added.<\/p>\n
Boxing<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Boxing Association has not given any target to
\nnational boxer Pino Bahari, the 1990 Asian Games gold medalist,
\nbecause of the fierce competition from Thai boxers.<\/p>\n
Pino, who won the silver medal in the 75kg event at the 1995
\nSEA Games in Chiang Mai Thailand, has turned pro.<\/p>\n
But council chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar urged promoter
\nTurino Tidar to delay Pino's plan. Pino is to receive Rp 100
\nmillion (US$41,700) for five pro matches and hopes to become the
\nPan-Asia Boxing Association's middleweight champion.<\/p>\n
The association's Secretary-General Didiet Soedijoto said the
\norganization would let the council make the decision deciding
\nwhere Pino would be coached.<\/p>\n
"If the council wants us to coach Pino, we'll be ready. But we
\ncan't decide who's best because we also have Otong Kosasih,"
\nDidiet said.<\/p>\n
"None of our boxers are targeted to win any gold medals in the
\nevent. But the association expects them to win four or six golds
\nin the Games," he added.<\/p>",
