        "content": "<p>Cyanide fishing seen as threat<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (DPA): Environmental officials said yesterday that<br>\ncyanide and dynamite fishing are threatening marine life in<br>\nsouthern Philippine and Malaysian islands, but they are puzzled<br>\nover the origin of the fishermen using the illegal practices.<\/p>\n<p>The bureau for protected areas and wildlife of the<br>\nPhilippines, under the environment and natural resources<br>\ndepartment, warned the methods constitute a major threat to the<br>\nTurtle Islands, six of which fall within Philippine territorial<br>\nboundaries with the other three in eastern Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\"We need to have more military patrols in the area,\" said<br>\nRhodora de Veyra, a biologist, noting corals in a \"protected<br>\narea\" are quickly diminishing.<\/p>\n<p>The fishermen are after schools of tuna, shark and grouper<br>\nthat abound in the waters 1,000 kilometers southwest of Manila<br>\nand 40 kilometers north of Sabah, Malaysia in the Sulu Sea.<\/p>",
