Cut marketing chain in fish trade: Surjadi<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The cumbersome procedures in the actual sales of
\nfish should be cut down and the welfare of fishermen improved
\nthrough cooperatives, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said.<\/p>\n
\"There are many fishermen on the city's coast and on the
\nSeribu islands whose lives could be improved through
\ncooperatives,\" Surjadi said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Among the constraints to enhance their welfare are the
\ncumbersome procedures involved in selling their catch,\" he said,
\nwhen opening the city's special week for promotion of
\nagriculture, cooperatives and family planning.<\/p>\n
Fishermen communities, such as the Untung Jawa island in the
\nSeribu Islands district, are among those categorized as the
\ncity's poorest. They are recipients of the presidential funds for
\npoverty.<\/p>\n
Along with opening activities at the Ragunan camping grounds
\nin Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Surjadi also officiated the Board
\nof farmers and fishermen executives' contact group.<\/p>\n
This week's activities are part of a national celebration of
\nthe 24th Agricultural Day, the 49th Cooperative Day, the 26th
\nFamily Planning Day and the 3rd Family Day.<\/p>\n
Artowo Sastrosemito, the head of the city's office of the
\nMinistry of Agriculture, said 500 workers in agriculture and
\nfishing are attending the activities. There will be attendance of
\nother groups which are part of the National Family Planning Board
\n- initiated new family savings movement.<\/p>\n
Surjadi urged officials to gear their attention toward the
\neffectiveness of cooperatives for workers in agriculture and
\nfishing.<\/p>\n
Related city offices are those of the Ministry of Cooperatives
\nand Small Enterprises, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the
\nagencies of fisheries and agriculture.<\/p>\n
Surjadi also urged more professionalism in agribusiness, to
\nincrease the commercial value of agricultural products here.<\/p>\n
\"For this purpose I call for more cooperation between farmers,
\ndistributors and traders,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
The activities include displays and sale of agricultural
