Customs office rebuked over waste<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: State Minister for the Environment Rachmat Witoelar
\nurged the excise and customs office on Wednesday to be honest and
\ncautious in screening imported raw materials following two recent
\ninstances of toxic waste entering through Indonesian ports.<\/p>\n
"We do not want this to happen again, especially with many
\ndeveloped countries believing they can just dump their toxic
\nwaste here," the minister said on the sidelines of a water and
\nwaste exhibition.<\/p>\n
He also said Indonesia was still not accustomed to promoting
\nenvironment sustainability.<\/p>\n
Rachmat was commenting on the recent imports of toxic waste
\nfrom Singapore and the United Kingdom. While the UK agreed to
\ntake the waste back, Singapore has refused to do so, claiming the
\nwaste was not hazardous.<\/p>\n
Police are questioning executives from fertilizer firm PT Asia
\nPacific Eco Lestari, which imported the waste from Singapore. The
\ngovernment has also asked the Swiss-based Basel Convention, which
\nrules on toxic waste movements, to intervene in the case and rule
\non Singapore's refusal to take back the waste. --JP<\/p>",
