Customs and Excise officers at Tanjung Priok, together with the\nDirectorate of Enforcement and Investigation, have thwarted the shipment\nof 8.96 million illegal cigarettes that lacked excise stamps. The\nenforcement action targeted two containers during supervision of\ninter-regional and inter-island goods traffic at the Tanjung Priok Port\narea.<\/p>\n
The operation began with a tip-off from the public regarding the\nsuspected shipment of illegal cigarettes from East Java to Sumatra via\nTanjung Priok. Following up on the information, officers conducted\nsurveillance and scanned containers at the port on Friday, 7 August\n2026.<\/p>\n
Based on analysis and intelligence gathering, officers identified two\ncontainers suspected of transporting illegal cigarettes, which had been\ndeclared as containing pipes and light steel. Both containers were\nsecured for further inspection at a temporary storage facility.<\/p>\n
To verify the contents, officers used a container scanner. The image\nanalysis revealed patterns resembling neatly arranged cartons,\nindicating the presence of illegal cigarettes. Based on these\nindications, both containers were detained and a formal intelligence\nreport was issued by Tanjung Priok Customs.<\/p>\n
A physical inspection conducted on Monday, 10 August 2026, uncovered\nexcisable tobacco products in the form of machine-made kretek cigarettes\nwithout excise stamps, totalling 8.96 million sticks across several\nbrands. The goods are estimated to be worth Rp 13.305 billion, with\npotential state losses reaching Rp 8.669 billion. This figure comprises\npotential excise revenue of Rp 6.684 billion, cigarette tax of Rp 668.44\nmillion, and value-added tax on tobacco products of Rp 1.317\nbillion.<\/p>\n
Further investigation revealed that the two containers were shipped\nfrom East Java to Tanjung Priok using cargo trains, with plans to\ncontinue their journey to Sumatra by sea.<\/p>\n
Director General of Customs and Excise, Letjen TNI (Purn.) Djaka\nBudhi Utama, stated that supervision of the circulation of illegal\nexcisable goods is part of Customs\u2019 efforts to ensure compliance with\nexcise regulations while protecting the public and state revenue.<\/p>\n
\u2018Customs continues to strengthen supervision of the circulation of\nillegal excisable goods, including on inter-regional and inter-island\ndistribution routes. This enforcement action demonstrates that\nsupervision is carried out continuously based on risk analysis and\ninformation received from the public,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
He added that eradicating the circulation of illegal cigarettes\nrequires support and synergy from various parties, including the public.\n\u2018We encourage the public to continue playing an active role by providing\ninformation if they suspect the circulation of illegal excisable goods.\nSynergy between Customs, the public, and other stakeholders is essential\nto create orderly and fair trade,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
Following the discovery, Tanjung Priok Customs secured all evidence\nfor further processing in accordance with statutory regulations.
